For the fourth consecutive season, the Connersville Spartans are kings of the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference basketball mountain.

The Spartans, 20-4 overall, won their final conference game on Feb. 17, a 53-35 victory at Lawrenceburg that gave CHS a 6-1 record and no less than a share of the EIAC title.

On Friday, Greensburg ventured to East Central and knocked off the Trojans, 51-43, a win that resulted in head coach Kerry Brown’s Spartans claiming sole possession of the conference championship.

Connersville’s record in EIAC play during the 4-year run is a glossy 26-2 — which included a record-setting 23-consecutive victories.

CHS will begin defense of its back-to-back Class 4A Sectional 9 championships on Tuesday against Greenfield-Central (7-15) at Tiernan Center in Richmond (6 p.m.). Pendleton Heights (11-12) and New Palestine (13-9) clash in Game 2 Tuesday.

Friday’s semifinals pit Mt. Vernon (Fortville) (13-9) against the winner of the Spartans-Cougars game (6 p.m.), and host Richmond (8-16) taking on the winner between Pendleton Heights and New Palestine (7:30 p.m.). The championship game begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

In tonight’s only game involving a Connersville-area school, New Castle defeated Muncie Central, 79-60, at Ball State University to improve to 22-2. The Trojans are the No. 1-rated team in Class 3A.
