Winning a 4th-consecutive Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference championship is one of the goals the Connersville Spartans and their coaching staff set prior to the season.

CHS, 15-4 overall and 3-1 in EIAC play, can inch closer to another title tonight when it battles East Central in a road contest (7:30 p.m.).

The Trojans are 12-6, 3-0 in the EIAC.

The Spartans rolled to a 63-34 win over host Centerville last Saturday, the team’s third straight win after losing to Batesville, 49-48, a loss that ended Connersville’s EIAC winning streak at 23 games.

East Central lost to Columbus North, 66-54, last Saturday, two days after the Trojans outlasted Lawrenceburg to post an 87-79 win in double overtime and remain unbeaten in conference play.

Senior guard Tyler Koelling, who had 26 points and 7 rebounds against Lawrenceburg, likely will provide the most problems for head coach Kerry Brown’s team.

The high-scoring, 6-2 sharpshooter scored 31 points in a win over North Decatur on Jan. 27, and poured in a career-high 40 against EIAC foe South Dearborn on Jan. 17.

That effort helped Koelling win the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Subway District 3 Player Of The Week Award for January 15-20.  Koelling was injured last season and did not play against the Spartans.

Other Trojans capable of impacting the game include Jared Volpenhein, a 6-4 senior who had 24 points and 8 rebounds in the win over Lawrenceburg, 6-6, 265-pound freshman Luke Collinsworth (18 points, 8 boards against the Tigers), 6-4 sophomore Trevor Becker, senior Joe Kirchgassner and 6-1 junior Alex Maxwell.

Collinsworth, Maxwell and Becker played on the Trojans’ IHSAA Class 4A state championship football team.

Garrett Silcott and Noah Belt, who scored 11 points apiece to lead a balanced CHS attack against Centerville, continue to lead the team in scoring.

Silcott averages 15.9 points, Belt averages 11.2. Silcott also leads the team in rebounding (5.6), assists (2.6) and steals (2.2).

Belt averages 3.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals.

Jacob Brown and Wes Smith average 3.3 and 3.2 boards, respectively. Brown scores 5.2 points a game, Dalton Lee averages 4.8 points and 1.7 assists and Wes Smith scores 4.1 points a contest.

The junior varsity contest begins at 6 p.m. Head coach Chris Bottomley’s Jr. Spartans are 15-4.
