Another double-dip weekend against high-quality competition awaits the Connersville Spartans basketball team, whose players and coaches would love to see a repeat of the results from last season — with less minutes needed for similar results.

CHS (12-4) hosts Mt. Vernon (Fortville) (7-6) tonight at Spartan Bowl; Indianapolis Manual (9-6) provides the opposition 24 hours later. Both games begin about 7:30 p.m. with JV action starting at 6.

A year ago, head coach Kerry Brown’s squad defeated Mt. Vernon, 88-85, in an epic 4-overtime thriller on the Marauders’ floor.

Forward Noah Belt had 23 points for the Big Red, including a 13-for-14 performance from the free throw line. Guard Garrett Silcott scored 16 points.

A few weeks later, in Sectional 9 play at New Castle Fieldhouse, the Spartans beat MV, 59-55, in a game that required two overtimes to decide the winner.

Against Manual at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, CHS whipped the Redskins, 68-54.

Sagarin ratings: CHS: 84.00 overall, 74.77 strength-of-schedule (66th), No. 21 4A, No. 32 all schools.

Mt. Vernon: 77.78 overall, 77.13 strength-of-schedule (43rd), No. 47 4A, No. 79 all schools.

Indianapolis Manual: 83.67 overall, 75.89 strength-of-schedule (54th), No. 8 3A, No. 36 all schools.

Notes: Manual plays at Class 2A No. 9 Indianapolis Howe (12-5) tonight. … The Redskins lost to Indianapolis Cathedral in double-overtime, 88-86, in the semifinals of the Indianapolis City Tourney. … Cathedral (15-2, 4A No. 9) is one of the teams that defeated the Spartans, 63-46, on Dec. 29 in the Bob Wettig Tournament at Richmond. … Along with Noah Belt, who made 13-of-14 free throws in Connersville’s 4-overtime, 88-85 regular season win over Mt. Vernon last year, former Spartan and 2017 Indiana All-Star Grant Smith — now playing at NAIA Div. II power Indiana Wesleyan — made 13 foul shots in 15 tries and scored 27 points.
