Connersville will try to improve to .500 on the season tonight when it travels to Aurora to challenge South Dearborn in a Division 4 Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference football game (7 p.m.).
The Spartans (1-2) are coming off a tough, 24-20 home loss to Greensburg last week, a game that saw the Pirates score with 25 seconds left to play after CHS took a 20-17 lead with 1:23 on the clock.
South Dearborn’s defense has played well in back-to-back games, giving up just 10 points. Last week, the Knights lost a home contest to Batesville, 7-0. The previous week, SD defeated Madison, 7-3, also on its own field.
Sophomore Dalton Guthrie rushed for 120 yards and caught two passes for 16 yards in the Knights’ loss to Batesville. Chance Sperringer, also a sophomore, caught two passes for 41 yards. Senior quarterback Trey Thies connected on 7-of-11 passes for 68 yards.
Dalton Dubois and Donovan Foreman were Connersville’s main offensive weapons against Greensburg, with Dubois rushing for 103 yards on 13 carries and scoring on a 78-yard sprint. Foreman churned out 82 yards on nine rushes, including a 76-yard TD burst.
Skylar Hentz picked up 15 yards on five carries and sophomore Alec Atkins had 3 yards on one rush.
Quarterback Adam Kelly Jr. ran for 9 yards and completed two passes for 64 yards and one TD, with senior Dylan Webber scoring on a 55-yard pass play. Junior Warren Toole caught one pass for 9 yards.
Senior Seth Bean scored a 2-point conversion for head coach Adam Kelly’s Spartans.
Notes: The Spartans have defeated South Dearborn four times during Kelly’s first five seasons at the helm. Last year, Connersville blasted the Knights, 40-0, at CHS Field. SD beat the Spartans, 27-7, in 2015. … Franklin County (3-0) will try to take a significant lead in the EIAC Division 4 standings when it hosts East Central (1-2). The Trojans are rated 9th in both the Associated Press and Indiana Football Coaches Association (IFCA) polls. The Wildcats are ranked 10th in the IFCA poll and 14th in the AP ratings.
