After helping the Connersville Spartans win 64 of 83 varsity games over a three-year span, including a school record 27-2 mark last season, Grant Smith is ready to suit up for the final two times as a high school player.
The 6-6 Smith will wear jersey No. 12 for the 2017 IndyStar Indiana boys All-Star team when it clashes with Kentucky’s All-Stars tonight at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, and Sunday afternoon at the Civic Center in Frankfort, Ky.
Tonight’s game will begin at approximately 7:15, after the girls game which tips off at 5 p.m. The girls will get Sunday’s doubleheader started at 2 p.m. with the boys game following.
Smith and his teammates hope to extend a 16-game winning streak over the Kentucky boys. The Indiana girls have defeated Kentucky 7 straight times.
“It’s a real honor to be on the All-Star team,” Smith said previously. “We want to show Kentucky what Indiana basketball is all about.”
The sixth boys All-Star in CHS history, the high-leaping Smith averaged 18.9 points, 9.9 rebounds and 4.7 assists during his senior season, all team-highs.
He will attend Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion. One of Smith’s All-Star teammates, 6-3 guard Kyle Mangas of Warsaw, also will attend Indiana Wesleyan.
Marty Beasley of Fort Wayne Carroll is head coach of the boys All-Stars with Connersvillle coach Kerry Brown and Mark Galloway of Culver Academy serving as assistant coaches.
“I feel very fortunate and I’m extremely honored,” Brown said about his role. “It’s a very rewarding feeling.”
Notes: The Hoosier stars will be missing two of their tallest players. Jaylen Butz, a 6-10 center from Fort Wayne North, and 7-0 center Malik Williams of Fort Wayne Snider, were selected to the team but have opted not to play.
Explosive 6-4 guard Jalen Adaway of Logansport was added to the team.
Zach Gunn, a 6-6 forward from Hamilton Southeastern, is injured and will not play, and Cloverdale’s Cooper Neese, a 6-4 guard, is playing with a broken little toe on his left foot.
The Spartans played against one of Kentucky’s All-Stars during the regular season. Clivonte Patterson, a 6-3 forward, played for Louisville Ballard. CHS defeated Ballard, 78-67, on Jan. 7 in the Indiana-Kentucky Challenge Cup at New Castle Fieldhouse.
Smith had 17 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists for CHS. Noah Belt tallied 20 points to top the Spartans, Beau Isaacs added 18. Patterson had 13 points and 5 rebounds for Ballard.
Tickets for tonight’s games will be available at The Fieldhouse. Prices start at $7.
