Some of the best senior high school basketball players in Indiana are ready to put their talent on display Sunday afternoon, including Connersville Spartans’ star Grant Smith.

The 6-6 Indiana All-Star candidate will play for the South team when it goes against the North in the 29th annual North/South Indiana All-Star Classic at Logansport High School’s Berry Bowl.

The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. when the state’s top senior girls go at it. The boys game tips off at 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door, according to officials.

It’s the second consecutive weekend Smith has taken the court with the state’s other top senior players.

Last Saturday, the Indiana Wesleyan University recruit scored 10 points to help his East team defeat the West, 153-85, in the Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Classic at Bloomington.

Smith helped lead Connersville to a sterling 27-2 record. The Spartans’ season ended when they were beaten in the title game of the Southport Regional by eventual Class 4A state champion Ben Davis.

Smith scored 549 points and averaged 18.9 points a game to lead head coach Kerry Brown’s Spartans. He finished with 1,033 career points.

The multi-talented wingman also led CHS in rebounding (9.9 per game), assists (4.7), steals (1.6) and blocked shots (1.4).

A few familiar faces will join Smith on the South squad: Northeastern guard Tyler Smith, Mt. Vernon (Fortville) sharpshooter Micheal Ertel and Pendleton Heights forward Mark Albers.

The Spartans defeated all three of those schools during the season, including two wins over Mt. Vernon that took 6 overtimes to decide — an 88-85, 4-overtime marathon during the regular season, and a 59-55 double-overtime win in the opening game of Sectional 9 at New Castle.

Hamilton Southeastern head coach Brian Satterfield will coach the South team. The North team will be coached by Pat Skaggs of Logansport.

The All-Star Classic is sponsored by Logansport High School, Hoosier Basketball Magazine and Pacesetter Sports of Terre Haute.
