Connersville is the 4th smallest school in Class 4A; New Castle drops to 3A

It’s official. The IHSAA announced new classifications for its member schools in six team sports for the next two school years.

ihsaa-logo-1Schools submitted enrollment figures — the total of boys and girls in grades 9 through 12 — to the Indiana Department of Education last fall.

The figures are used to determine the classifications in the sports of boys and girls basketball, baseball, football, boys and girls soccer, softball and volleyball.

Connersville High School, with an enrollment of 1,111 students, remains a Class 4A school. Jasper, Kankakee Valley, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, Jay County and Columbia City are the only schools in 4A with less students than CHS.

A change that was expected saw New Castle High School fall to Class 3A. New Castle’s enrollment is 1,023, making it the 4th-largest school in 3A.

Classifications for baseball and softball will be released in several days, according to the IHSAA.
