The hype surrounding the Connersville Spartans basketball team has been staggering the last week or two. And deservedly so.

But it’s time for the Spartans — whose 26-1 record is the best in Indiana — to get down to business, and that business officially begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Southport Fieldhouse.

Coach Kerry Brown’s 14th-rated team will battle it out with Brownsburg (18-6) in Game 1 of Class 4A regional action.

No. 7 Indianapolis North Central (23-4) and 12th-ranked Ben Davis (19-5) will square off in Game 2 at noon.

CHS will try to make it 19 consecutive victories but the task won’t be easy. Brownsburg is a strong team with lots of height and plenty of talent.

And the status of Connersville senior Beau Isaacs — who sustained a left knee injury in the final seconds of the Spartans’ sectional win over Mt. Vernon — won’t be known until game time.

Isaacs’ rehab is going well, according to Brown, who is hopeful the 6-4 forward will be ready to go.

Coach Steve Lynch’s Bulldogs are led by 6-0 sophomore Cameron Alford, who averages 17.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists, and Landon Hall, a 6-4 senior who scores 15.5 points and grabs 5.5 rebounds an outing.

Hall had 29 points in the Bulldogs’ 83-78 win over Terre Haute South in the championship game of Sectional 12 at Plainfield.

Six-four sophomore Reis Thomas averages 7.6 points and 4.6 boards, 6-4 junior Antrez Baker averages 6.0 points and 5.3 rebounds, 6-1 senior Packard Rozzi averages 5.3 points and Kyle Wolf, a 6-7 junior, chips in 3.6 points a game.

The Spartans are led by 6-6 senior All-State candidate Grant Smith, who averages 19 points, 10.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

Smith’s first point of the game will put him in rare air status of Spartans basketball — he’ll join the 1,000 career points scored club.

Garrett Silcott averages 11.4 points, 4.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds, Isaacs averages 11.8 points and 5.4 rebounds, Noah Belt averages 6.4 points and 2.3 rebounds, Dalton Huffman scores 5.0 points a contest and Hunter Sullenbarger averages 3.2 points.

Brownsburg scores 61.3 points per game and gives up 54.5 defensively. The Spartans average 58.7 points and surrender just 46.3.

Hayward hit a buzzer-beating basket to give the Bulldogs a 40-39 win over Marion.

Connersville’s 1,000 career points club includes Matt Howard: 1,463 points, 1972 Mr. Basketball Phil Cox: 1,301, Bill Mackie: 1,231, Greg Ellis: 1,213, Bob Myers: 1,102 and Zach Miller: 1,093.
