The Connersville-Brownsburg Class 4A regional game Saturday morning will be played in one of the nicest high school gymnasiums in Indiana.
The No. 14 Spartans (26-1) and Bulldogs (18-6) will get down to business in Southport Fieldhouse, which opened in 1958. The game begins at 10 a.m.
In the second game, No. 7 Indianapolis North Central (23-4) will play 12th-rated Ben Davis (19-5) (approximately 12 p.m.).
Located at 971 E. Banta Road in Indianapolis, Southport Fieldhouse has a seating capacity of 7,124, making it the 10th largest gym in Indiana, according to John R. Harrell’s Homestead.com website.
Like Spartan Bowl, the Fieldhouse is a fan favorite of many, and considered a special place to play by most high school players.
Spectators have enjoyed numerous IHSAA boys’ and girls’ regionals, as well as other tournaments and events in the facility over the past 58 years.
Connersville fans will recall a memorable and remarkable but heart-breaking game that took place in the Fieldhouse in March 1999.
The Lady Spartans, led by Miss Basketball April McDivitt, had their incredible season come to an end in semistate play, losing to eventual state champion New Albany, 66-61, in an intense, double-overtime game for the ages.
McDivitt — now April Schilling, whose husband Ed is a former Spartan and currently an assistant coach to Steve Alford at No. 3 UCLA (28-3) — scored 25 points and made three long 3-pointers late to keep CHS alive.
However, Connersville — which finished with a glossy 25-2 record — could not stop Kennitra Johnson.
The senior forward tallied a career-high 47 points for the Lady Bulldogs, who outscored Connersville, 9-4, in the 2nd overtime.
