The 2016-17 edition of the Connersville Spartans will try to become the first boys varsity team in school history to win 20 regular season games when they host New Palestine tonight at the Bowl (7:30 p.m.).

Connersville, rated 13th in the Associated Press poll and 20th in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association rankings, improved to 19-1 on Thursday by beating East Central, 44-36.

The Spartans’ 11th straight regular season win was the team’s 18th consecutive victory in Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference play.

A true power in football, New Palestine is limping along with a 4-14 record on the hardwood after losing to 4A Shelbyville, 92-79, Friday night.

The Dragons have lost three straight and have won just once in their last six games, beating Yorktown, 69-32, on Jan. 27.

New Palestine features a guard-oriented attack with Maximus Gizzi, Jalen Qualkinbush and Matthew True leading the way.

Gizzi, a 5-11 freshman, averages 12.0 points, 3.9 assists and 3.2 rebounds a game. A 5-11 sophomore, True averages 10.8 points and Qualkinbush, a 6-0 senior, averages 10.5 points and 4.7 rebounds.

Six-four junior Gavin Hausz averages 9.7 points and 6-2 sophomore Dylan Romine contributes 6.7 points. Both average 3.0 rebounds a contest.

The Spartans defeated East Central after overcoming a poor first half that saw them score only 10 points.

Grant Smith scored 12 of his game-high 16 points in the final 16 minutes; Garrett Silcott and Noah Belt both scored 8 points in the fourth quarter, with all of Silcott’s tallies coming from the free throw line.

Offense / defense: CHS: averages 59.0 points per game … gives up 45.8 defensively. New Palestine: 52.8 … 58.4.

Sagarin ratings: CHS: 83.94 overall, 70.68 strength-of-schedule (128th), No. 33 4A, No. 36 all schools.
New Palestine: 65.89 overall, 73.26 strength-of-schedule (94th), No. 55 3A, No. 195 all schools.
