The Connersville Spartans can take a big step toward a third consecutive Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference championship tonight when they host East Central at Spartan Bowl (7:30 p.m.).

CHS 18-1 and rated No. 13 in the Associated Press poll, has won 17 straight conference games and 10 straight regular season contests. East Central is 12-6 overall, 2-1 in the EIAC.

The Spartans are rated No. 20 in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) poll.

“It’s a huge conference game. We control our own destiny, we’re the only team without a loss, so we need to play well and get the win,” Connersville head coach Kerry Brown said prior to Wednesday’s practice.

Brown said junior point guard Garrett Silcott, injured during CHS’ 45-32 win over Centerville last Saturday, will be ready to play, but the floor general has missed some practice time this week.

Silcott lost a tooth and sustained a mouth injury when he and Bulldogs’ forward Justin Dupree collided in the fourth quarter.

The Spartans will face a Trojans team that likes to play at a fast pace and features two strong scorers. Brady Ewing, a 6-5 senior, averages nearly 25 points and over 7 rebounds a game, and junior guard Tyler Koelling averages almost 17 points.

Senior Sam Sehlhorst, juniors Jared Volpenhein and Joe Kirchgassner and sophomores Cole Spencer and Alex Maxwell have played well for coach David Disbro’s team.

East Central has lost two straight games and three of its last four. EC was beaten at home by Columbus North, 47-35, on Feb. 4. Ewing scored 20 points, Sehlhorst added 6. Both made a pair of 3-pointers.

On Feb. 2, the Trojans lost to host Lawrenceburg, 69-58, in a conference game. Koelling scored a game-high 27 points, 23 in the first half. Ewing had 14 and Spencer contributed 6.

“We have to play well defensively and we have to know where Ewing and Koelling are all the time,” said Brown. “Both of them can flat out score. They both can get to the hole, they can shoot the three and they’re good free throw shooters.

“Ewing reminds me a little bit of Grant (Smith) — he can score outside and inside, he’s got some really good moves and he knocks down his foul shots.”

Smith averages a double-double to lead the Spartans: 17.7 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists.

Silcott and Beau Isaacs both average 12.1 points a game, Noah Belt averages 7.2 and Dalton Huffman scores 5.3 a contest. Hunter Sullenbarger comes off the bench to average 2.2 points.

East Central scores two more points a game than the Spartans — 61.7 to 59.7. However, the Trojans give up 57.0 a contest while CHS surrenders just 46.3.

“East Central wants to run, they like to get out and go so we have to be ready. We have to play defense well and rebound the basketball,” Brown said. “As I said, we control our own destiny so we have to play well — everybody, our starters and our guys that come off the bench. We just have to go out there and do it.”

Sagarin ratings: CHS: 84.32 overall, 71.06 strength-of-schedule (121st), No. 27 4A, No. 30 all schools.
East Central: 69.07 overall, 64.74 strength-of-schedule (187th), No. 88 4A, No. 156 all schools.
