The last time the Connersville Spartans walked off the basketball court after an official game:

1) CHS (10-1) had hammered Indianapolis Lighthouse, 60-34, in the Bob Wettig Tournament in Richmond;

2) The Greensburg Pirates won their Holiday Tournament with victories over North Harrison and Milan;

3) Louisville Ballard (10-2, No. 7) was winning the 8-team Wes Unseld Classic at Seneca High School in Louisville, where Unseld was a prep All-American.

While it’s likely that the majority of Spartans’ fans are looking ahead to the CHS-Ballard matchup at New Castle Fieldhouse Saturday night, head coach Kerry Brown will never waiver from what he considers the main priority for his team — win tonight’s Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference game at Greensburg.

Despite losing all five starters from last year’s team, as well as versatile forward Mason McLeod to a season-ending knee injury, Greensburg has played well in carving out a 6-3 record.

The youthful Pirates get strong contributions from several players, including freshman Andrew Welage, the team’s leading scorer, juniors Kyle Sellers and Matt Martin, senior Sam Slusher and sophomore Drew Comer.

Connersville and Greensburg share first place in the EIAC with 2-0 records.

The Pirates beat South Dearborn, 67-40, and Franklin County, 67-55. The Spartans’ conference wins are against South Dearborn, 40-24, and Rushville, 45-15.

Welage scored 24 points against Franklin County, Comer added 18, Martin had 9 points and Slusher finished with 6 points and 9 rebounds. In a 59-54 loss to Jennings County on Dec. 16, Comer tallied 19 points for head coach Stacy Meyer’s team.

CHS won 3-of-4 games in the Wettig Tourney, defeating Indianapolis Tindley, 71-63, Indianapolis Herron, 93-46, and Lighthouse. The Big Red lost to Portage, 69-56.

Grant Smith was a double-double machine — he also wracked up a triple-double — in earning All-Tournament honors.

The 6-6 senior had 21 points, 16 rebounds and 7 assists against Tindley; 26 points and 13 rebounds against Portage; 19 points, 12 assists and 11 boards against Herron; and 23 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals against Lighthouse. Smith averages 17.6 points, 10.1 caroms and 3.8 assists.

Forward Beau Isaacs, who scored 25 points against Tindley and 20 against Herron, averages 11.5 points and 5.2 rebounds. Point guard Garrett Silcott averages 11.2 points, 3.9 assists and 3.4 rebounds, center Dalton Huffman checks in at 5.4 points and 2.5 boards and shooting guard Noah Belt averages 5.0 points and 1.5 rebounds.
