Utilizing a pestering defense all night and showing patience for an offensive game to develop that was lacking in the first quarter, the Connersville Spartans turned it on Friday night to blast host Rushville, 45-15, in an Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference game at Memorial Gymnasium.

On top 7-5 after the first quarter, CHS limited the Lions to just 2 points in the second quarter, 5 in the third and 3 in the fourth, the final points coming on a 3-pointer with a minute left in the game.

Connersville, ranked 22nd in the Associated Press Class 4A poll, improved to 2-0 overall, 1-0 in EIAC play. CHS plays at No. 20 Shelbyville tonight in a non-conference game. The Golden Bears (2-1) lost to Columbus North Friday night, 73-67, in overtime. Rushville (0-2) plays at New Palestine (0-2) tonight.

Beau Isaacs scored 10 points to lead a balanced scoring attack that saw all 10 Spartans score. Grant Smith added 7 points, Garrett Silcott, Noah Belt and Dalton Huffman 6 each, Hunter Sullenbarger had 3, Dalton Lee and Wes Smith scored 2 apiece and Gavin Wickes added a free throw.

Sean Taylor, Ike Sheehan and Gage Rosenfeld each scored 3 points to top the Lions, who did not shoot a free throw.

Head coach Kerry Brown lauded the Spartans for their defensive effort and offensive execution, noting the importance of quarter-ending plays that saw Connersville get a 3-pointer by Belt to push the CHS advantage to 21-7 at halftime, and a layup by Revalee that made it 31-12 entering the final 8 minutes.

“Those things are daggars,” noted Brown. “We did a lot of good things tonight. We always try to play defense with our bodies and our feet without slapping and we did that. Our defense was able to keep them out of the lane. We’re going to have to play well tonight at Shelbyville.”

The Jr. Spartans made it a clean sweep, defeating the Lions reserves, 47-43, to improve to 2-0.
