On Thanksgiving Eve, the Connersville Spartans boys varsity and JV basketball teams will embark on a 2016-17 season full of expectations when Union County visits Spartan Bowl in the traditional season opener.

Head coach Kerry Brown’s veteran team finished 21-6 last season, won the school’s first sectional championship since 1997, and made it back-to-back Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference championships, cruising to a perfect 7-0 record.

The Spartans, who beat the Patriots, 49-33, last year, will have nine days off before playing game 2, a road contest at Rushville and the team’s first EIAC test of the season. Connersville defeated the Lions last season, 56-48, in a game that went into overtime.

CHS will again participate in the annual Bob Wettig Tournament in Richmond (Dec. 27-29), and new this season will be the Spartans appearing in the one-day, single-game Indiana-Kentucky Challenge Cup on January 7 at New Castle Fieldhouse.

Connersville will play always-strong Louisville Ballard in one of five games between schools from the two states.

CHS hosts Knightstown at 1 p.m. Saturday in a scrimmage game.

Stay tuned to court traveler sports for a preview about the upcoming season and game coverage.
