chs-spartans-logoEvery team, no matter what sport, has a toughest opponent or best team on its schedule. That time has arrived for the Connersville Spartans gridiron gang.

The Spartans (2-4) will try to win their second consecutive game when East Central visits CHS Field tonight for a Class 4A Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference game. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Connersville will try to duplicate a running attack that cranked out 446 rushing yards in a 43-6 win over host Indianapolis Broad Ripple last week. At the same time, East Central (5-1) was running roughshod over South Dearborn, beating the Knights, 57-0, in an EIAC game.

The Trojans are rated No. 3 in Class 4A by the Associated Press. EC’s only loss is to Cincinnati La Salle, 31-0. La Salle is rated 19th in Ohio’s Div. II, and was ranked No. 5 when it shut out EC.

Donovan Foreman tops the CHS ground attack with 435 rushing yards. The junior gained 68 in the Spartans’ win over Broad Ripple.

Senior Christian McHenry ran for 145 yards and scored two touchdowns against the Rockets, and has 358 rushing yards after 6 games.

Mason Sullenberger picked up 86 yards (117 on the season) and scored two TDs — one on the ground, the other a 10-yard pass from freshman Alec Atkins.

Sophomore Dalton Light scored a TD (33 total rushing yards) and junior Jared Isaacs gained 65 yards on just 3 carries. Junior Dalton Dubois’ 27 yards give him 129 on the year.

Coach Adam Kelly’s team also scored on a 9-yard pass from freshman Trevor Becker to senior Christopher Dudas.

Sullenberger, a senior, is Connersville’s leading receiver with 10 catches for 209 yards. Dubois has 8 receptions for 82 yards, Dudas has hauled in 3 catches for 49 yards.

The CHS defense limited Broad Ripple to 24 rushing yards, 102 yards overall and just 3 first downs. Sophomore James Russell converted a 2-point safety for the Spartans.

East Central’s strong ground game is led by junior Logan Storie, who’s rushed for nearly 600 yards.
