The long wait is over.

The Connersville Spartans defeated New Castle, 63-55, Saturday night to win the Class 4A Sectional 9 championship, the 1st sectional title for CHS in 19 years.

Coach Kerry Brown’s Spartans (21-5) will play host Southport in Game 2 of the Southport regional next Saturday. The Cardinals, 20-6, are rated 9th in Class 4A. No. 3 Indianapolis North Central (22-3) plays Terre Haute South (21-6) in the opening game.

Junior forward Grant Smith set the tone early, scoring 8 of his game-high 20 points in the 1st quarter, including 3 dunks that got the large throng of Connersville fans pumped to the max.

Point guard Garrett Silcott added 17 points, Tyler Billups scored 11, Beau Isaacs, who left the game for several minutes in the 3rd quarter due to a sprained ankle, had 9, Chandler Graves 4 and Dalton Huffman 2.

“We thought we could do this and you have to give the kids credit, they came in here and didn’t give up. They held on and won a really tough game,” said Brown.

With Smith and Silcott combining for 14 points, the Spartans opened a 14-9 lead after one quarter and expanded it to 27-17 at the half.

There was some delay in play during the 3rd quarter —when Isaacs suffered his ankle injury and had to go to the lockerroom for treatment, and when emergency medical personnel had to administer aid to a fan in the upper region of the New Castle Fieldhouse.

CHS held New Castle’s leading scorer, Andrew Garrett, without a point through the 1st three quarters, but the long-range shooter scored 5 quick points to open the 3rd stanza, helping cut the Connersville lead to 47-39.

Garrett’s backcourt mate, David Froedge, made four 3-pointers in the final quarter as the Trojans continued to chip away at the lead.

A free throw by 6-6 freshman Mason Gillis narrowed the gap to 50-46 with 1:15 to play, but the Spartans utilized their patient attack, forcing the Trojans to foul.

After Billups scored a layin off a full-court pass, it was free throw time for Connersville. Billups made 4 consecutive freebies, Silcott made 5-of-6, Isaacs sank a pair, and Graves made 1-of-2 to put away the win.

“They cut it to four but we made our free throws, as we’ve done all year,” Brown said about his team’s 20-for-26 effort. “I thought our defense was really good, almost all night. They made some 3s in the second half but overall I thought our defense was good.”

Froedge topped the Trojans with 18 points, Gillis had 15 and Garrett finished with 8.

Brown said the players and coaches are looking forward to the school’s 1st regional appearance since before any of the current Spartans were born.

“It’s going to be a great experience for our kids,” he said. “We thought we could get there because our kids have done what we’ve wanted them to do all year. They bought into the system. We’ve got an excellent group of kids that I’m really proud of.”
