A strong defensive effort and 2nd-half rally lifted the Gardner-Webb University women’s basketball team to a 61-51 victory over Coastal Carolina Saturday in Big South Conference action.
Candace Brown knocked down a game-high 21 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead GWU, now 19-10 overall, 13-6 in Big South play. Coastal Carolina is to 11-16 overall, 6-12 BSC.
Olivia Parker had 16 points and 16 rebounds — her 5th-consecutive double-double, Alexus Hill scored 7 points and former Connersville Lady Spartan Tierra Huntsman finished with 5 points, 4 assists and 1 rebound.
Ced Gibson and Jas Adams led the Chanticleers with 12 points each.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs shot just 8-of-26 from the floor (30.7) in the 1st half and trailed, 30-29, at the break. But the shooting touch returned in the final 20 minutes, with GWU making 7-of-16 3rd-quarter shots and 6-of-10 in the 4th. CCU finished 19-of-69 from the field (27.5 percent).
Leading 44-42 at the start of the final 10 minutes, Gardner-Webb got three baskets by Brown, one each by Parker and Charlisa Jenkins, and a foul shot by Alicia Quinn to outscore Coastal Carolina, 9-2, and take a 53-44 advantage.
Huntsman made 2 free throws in the final 2:48 and got her final assist of the game when she connected with Parker who made the final basket of the game with 47 seconds remaining. CCU did not score in the final 2:28.
GWU concludes its regular season Saturday with a road game at Longwood University (2 p.m.). The Runnin’ Bulldogs blasted the Lancers, 67-42, on Jan. 19.
