Sophomore guard Alexus Hill scored 13 consecutive points in the 1st quarter to help power the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball team to a 57-51 win over UNC Asheville Tuesday night at Paul Porter Arena.
GWU improves to 18-10 overall, 12-6 in Big South Conference play. UNC Asheville is 21-5 overall and remains in 1st place in the conference with a 14-3 record.
Hill scored a game-high 17 points for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, senior Candace Brown had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Connersville High School graduate Tierra Huntsman finished with 7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal.
Gardner-Webb, which made 15-of-29 shots in the first half (51.7 percent), led 24-13 after one quarter and 38-28 at the break.
GWU shot just 3-of-16 in the 3rd quarter, allowing Asheville to cut the deficit to 44-42 entering the final 10 minutes. Ashville tied things at 51-all, but Huntsman made 3-of-4 free throws in the final 1:39 and Brown added a basket and foul shot to nail down the win.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs’ defense was at its best in the 4th quarter, holding Asheville to 4-of-14 shooting in the period and limiting the Bulldogs to just 2 points during the final 5 minutes.
Evelyn Adebayo came off the bench to score 7 points and grab 10 rebounds for Gardner-Webb, senior forward Olivia Parker had 7 points and 4 rebounds. K.J. Weaver led Asheville with 15 points and 8 rebounds.
Gardner-Webb plays at Coastal Carolina Saturday (2 p.m.).
