Trailing throughout the game and by as many as 12 points, the Gardner-Webb University women’s basketball team mounted a 2nd half comeback to defeat High Point, 79-72, Saturday in Big South Conference play. Gardner-Webb improves to 16-9 overall, 10-5 in the BSC. High Point is 8-15, 7-7 in the conference.
The senior duo of Candace Brown and Olivia Parker led the Runnin’ Bulldogs, with Brown scoring 24 points, grabbing 4 rebounds and passing for 4 assists, and Parker scoring 13 points, pulling down 11 rebounds and blocking 7 shots, a career-high.
Morgan Ackermann scored 11 points for GWU and former Connersville Lady Spartan Tierra Huntsman had 10 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Evelyn Adebayo came off the bench to score 8 points, all in the 2nd half. Haleigh Hatfield tallied 24 points to lead High Point.
Shooting nearly 46 percent from the floor in the opening half, the Panthers led 25-17 after one quarter and 40-38 at the midway break. GWU kept pace thanks to 46.9-percent shooting, including five 3-pointers in 9 attempts, two of the treys by Huntsman.
Coach Rick Reeves’ Runnin’ Bulldogs turned the tables on the Panthers defensively in the 2nd half, holding High Point to 13-of-39 shooting (33.3 percent) while firing away at a 53.3-percent clip (16-for-30).
An 8-0 run by GWU to open the 4th quarter helped the team outscore the hosts, 25-12, in the final 10 minutes to pick up the win.
Gardner-Webb hosts Presbyterian College Tuesday at Paul Porter Arena (7 p.m.). The Blue Hose beat GWU, 60-53, on Jan. 30.
Notes: Huntsman opened the game by draining a 3-pointer but High Point ran off 14 consecutive points to take a 14-3 lead. Parker ended the run when she made a layup. … Huntsman scored 5 straight points in the 2nd quarter, a 3-pointer and a layup, cutting the Panthers lead to 25-22 and forcing the team to call a timeout. … Ackermann and Adebayo set career-highs in scoring.
