Candace Brown scored 16 points and Connersville High School graduate Tierra Huntsman added 14 but it wasn’t enough as host Presbyterian College defeated Gardner-Webb University, 60-53, Saturday.
GWU is 13-8 overall, 7-4 in Big South Conference play. Presbyterian improves to 12-8, 8-3 BSC.
Both teams shot 35-percent from the floor and 25-percent from 3-point territory, but Presbyterian made 4 more treys (7-3) and converted 13-of-15 free throws compared to the Runnin’ Bulldogs 8-for-13 effort from the foul line.
Huntsman, who also had 2 assists, a rebound and a steal, made all 3 of GWU’s 3-pointers, finishing 3-for-8 from behind the arc.
Taylor Petty scored 16 points and grabbed 4 rebounds to lead the Blue Hose, with Janie Mills adding 15 points.
GWU led 15-9 after 1 quarter and 25-23 at halftime, and maintained a 28-26 advantage on a Huntsman trey with 8:32 to play in the 3rd period.
Presbyterian led 38-34 after 3 quarters and outscored the Runnin’ Bulldogs 22-19 in the last 10 minutes to establish the final margin.
Brown had 7 rebounds and 2 assists for GWU. Celia Tibbs finished with 7 points and 7 rebounds and Alicia Quinn pulled down 7 boards. Leading scorer and rebounder Olivia Parker did not play.
Gardner-Webb hosts Campbell University at 7 p.m. Monday.
