The Gardner-Webb women’s basketball team never got its offense untracked Tuesday night, losing to host Liberty University, 73-51.
The loss snapped a 6-game winning streak for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, now 13-7 overall and 7-3 in Big South Conference play. Liberty improved to 11-8, 8-2 BSC.
Olivia Parker and Candace Brown scored 8 points apiece for GWU, which shot just 19-of-71 from the floor (26.8 percent). Connersville High School graduate Tierra Huntsman had 6 points, 4 rebounds and a team-high 4 assists.
Liberty took control early, making 13-of-20 shots in the opening period and using a 12-1 run to take a 30-16 lead.
Tighter defense by GWU in the 2nd quarter helped cool off the Flames (5-of-14, 35.7 percent), but the hosts, aided by a 14-2 run during the opening 5 minutes of the period, still expanded their lead to 47-29 at halftime. It was 59-42 after 3 quarters.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs had a shooting night the team would like to forget. The GWU starters combined to shoot just 7-for-34 (20.5 percent). Parker was 3-for-7; Brown 2-for-10; Alexus Hill 1-for-10; Huntsman 1-for-6 and Alicia Quinn 0-for-1.
Charlisa Jenkins came off the bench to make 3-of-4 shots and score 6 points for Gardner-Webb. Ky’Asia Stanford also scored 6 points, shooting 3-for-9. Celia Tibbs made both of her field goal attempts to tally 4 points.
Catherine Kearney scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Liberty.
Gardner-Webb plays at Presbyterian College (11-8, 7-3 BSC) Saturday (5 p.m.).
