The Gardner-Webb women’s basketball team made it 5 straight wins Tuesday night, beating Longwood University, 67-42, at Paul Porter Arena. Olivia Parker and Alexus Hill scored 15 points each as the Runnin’ Bulldogs improved to 12-6 overall, 6-2 in Big South Conference play. Longwood is 5-13 overall, 2-7 in conference play.
Connersville native Tierra Huntsman finished with 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist in 32 minutes action.
Candace Brown added 8 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and Celia Tibbs came off the bench to score 8 points in 10 minutes, making all 4 of her field goal attempts.
The game was close in the 1st half, with GWU leading 31-22 at the break. It was all Gardner-Webb after that, with the Runnin’ Bulldogs defense holding Longwood to just one basket in the 3rd quarter, a jump shot by Autumn Childress with 6:18 on the clock.
The Lancers shot 1-for-14 during the period, which ended with Gardner-Webb leading, 47-24. Longwood scored just 4 points between the 6:13 mark of the 2nd quarter and the final 9 minutes of the game.
Coach Rick Reeves’ team outrebounded the Lancers, 48-39, and scored 24 points off of 19 Longwood turnovers. The Lancers shot 16-of-61 from the floor (26.2 percent) and 3-of-15 on 3-pointers (20 percent). GWU shot 29-of-66 overall (43.9 percent) and 5-of-19 from 3-point territory (26.3 percent).
GWU hosts Radford University at 2 p.m. Saturday in Big South Conference play. The Highlanders are 10-7 overall, 6-2 in the BSC.
