The Gardner-Webb women’s basketball team defeated UNC Asheville, 58-56, Saturday afternoon, the team’s 4th-straight victory. Candace Brown scored inside with 9.2 seconds left, and a 3-pointer by Asheville’s Tianna Knuckles bounced off the rim as time expired, giving the Runnin’ Bulldogs the victory.
GWU improves to 11-6 overall, 5-2 in Big South Conference play. The league-leading Bulldogs are 13-4 overall, 6-2 in the conference.
Olivia Parker tallied a game-high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Brown had 16 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocked shots, Alexus Hill scored 9 points and Connersville High School graduate Tierra Huntsman finished with 8 points and 3 rebounds. Knuckles scored 18 points to lead UNC Asheville.
Gardner-Webb, which outrebounded the Bulldogs, 40-31, shot 25-of-53 from the floor (47.2 percent) but managed just one 3-pointer in 11 tries (9.1 percent).
The winners trailed by as many as 10 points in the 1st half (28-18) but outscored the hosts, 30-24, in the final 20 minutes to register the win.
Gardner-Webb hosts Longwood University (5-12, 2-6 BSC) Tuesday at Paul Porter Arena (7 p.m.)
