Coastal Carolina clips Gardner-Webb women

gardner-webb logo 3Nicole Isaacs made two free throws with 3 seconds remaining to help Coastal Carolina defeat Gardner-Webb, 59-56, Saturday in a Big South Conference game.

Rachel Gregory came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points and grab 9 rebounds to lead Coastal Carolina (6-7, 1-3 BSC). Yasmin Miller added 16 points and Isaacs finished with 8.

The game was close throughout, with the Runnin’ Bulldogs leading, 25-24, at halftime and CC taking a 41-40 lead into the final quarter. GWU forged a 47-44 lead on a basket by Alexus Hill with 9:07 left to play, but the Chanticleers responded to take a 51-46 advantage with 5:13 remaining.

Connersville native Tierra Huntsman canned a 3-pointer at the 4:50 mark to cut the deficit to 51-49, and Hill was able to tie the game at 53-all and 55-55 on a layup and jump shot.

Gregory made a layup to break the tie, but Runnin’ Bulldogs’ senior Olivia Parker drew a foul with 1:16 on the clock. Parker missed the first charity toss but made the second, and neither team scored again until Isaacs’ free throws secured the win.

Hill, who fouled out with 4 seconds left, scored 15 points to lead Gardner-Webb. Parker finished with 14 points and 9 rebounds, Huntsman scored 11 points and Candace Brown had 10 points and 7 boards.

GWU (7-6 overall, 1-2 BSC) plays at Campbell University Monday in a conference game (7 p.m.).
