Gardner-Webb women defeat Bluefield College

It was a clean sweep inside Paul Porter Arena Thursday as the Gardner-Webb University women’s and men’s teams closed out 2015 with victories.

gardner=webb logoThe Runnin’ Bulldogs women defeated Bluefield College, 64-51, with the men beating Coastal Carolina, 65-61, in a Big South Conference matchup.

Senior forward Olivia Parker put the hurt on Bluefield, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Candace Brown scored 12 points and former Connersville Lady Spartan Tierra Huntsman had 7 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

Freshman Morgan Ackermann came off the bench and made a trio of 3-pointers, finishing with 9 points. Alexus Hill and Alicia Quinn scored 6 points apiece for the winners. Maryah Mazyck led the Rams with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

Gardner-Webb shot just 37.9-percent from the floor (22-of-58) but scored 28 points off 24 Bluefield turnovers, and made 15-of-20 free throws to improve to 7-5.

The loss ends a 3-game losing streak for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, who begin Big South Conference play for the remainder of the year Saturday when they host Coastal Carolina (2 p.m.).

Tyrell Nelson paced the men’s team with a game-high 20 points. The 6-7 junior also had 7 rebounds and blocked 3 shots. Harold McBride scored 16 points and Dylan Poston had 12.

G-W (7-8, 2-1 Big South) travels to Longwood University for a conference game Saturday (2 p.m.).
