The Runnin’ Bulldogs (6-5), who lost 3 straight games in Puerto Rico, will try to make amends Thursday afternoon when they host Bluefield College (3:30 p.m.).
In the first game at Coliseo Ruben Zayas Montanez, Western Michigan dominated inside and held G-W to 23.6-percent shooting (13-of-55) to win, 71-44. Olivia Parker had 12 point and 8 rebounds to pace the Runnin’ Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb’s best showing came against SMU, which overcame a 7-point deficit to register a 69-61 victory. Connersville native Tierra Huntsman scored a career-high 25 points for G-W.
The redshirt sophomore shot 7-of-13 from the floor, 3-of-5 from 3-point territory and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Huntsman, who played all 40 minutes, also had 4 rebounds, 3 steals and an assist. Olivia Parker led G-W with a game-high 27 points.
In the final game in Trujillo Alto, the Runnin’ Bulldogs lost to Arizona, 79-60. Alexus Hill topped G-W with 14 points, Candace Brown scored 13, Parker had 12 and Huntsman finished with 10 points, 4 steals, 3 rebounds and 1 assist.
Parker leads coach Rick Reeves’ quintet, averaging 14.7 points and 9.1 boards a contest. Brown averages 14.4 points and 6.7 caroms, Huntsman averages 11.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 steals, and Hill averages 11.2 points.
Thursday’s game is part of a G-W hoops New Year’s Eve doubleheader at Paul Porter Arena. The men’s team (6-8) tangles with Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. in a Big South Conference game.
