(Indiana High School Athletic Association News Release)
In the midst of his 25th year as a local sportscaster, Sam Harvey of 106.9 FM & 1580 AM WLPK in Connersville will be presented the 2015-16 Distinguished Media Service Award for District 3.
Harvey’s contributions to education-based athletics will be recognized on Wednesday evening at Spartan Bowl when Connersville hosts Union County in the boys basketball season opener.
IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox and Sports Information Director Jason Wille will make the presentation.
Harvey will be behind the microphone that evening in the season opener for both schools as the Radio Voice of the Connersville Spartans, a chair he’s accustomed to after calling boys basketball games dating back to 1991. It was then that Harvey began providing color commentary with long time radio personality John White for boys basketball games as well as Matt Turner and Tom Lee.
In 1995, the station began carrying all local girls basketball games as well. In 2009, Harvey joined the school’s football broadcasts, first working with Brett Briscoe and then Kevin Couch.
In 2010, he assumed the play-by-play duties for all boys and girls basketball games, and was joined by new analyst Dave Pollard last season, while continuing to provide color analysis for football broadcasts.
Also new this season, Harvey co-hosts a local weekly cable access television show “Spartan Sports Report” with Fran Chomel, who was the radio voice of the Spartans during the 1960s and 1970s.
“It’s truly been a privilege to cover local sports and to get to work in one of the great gyms in the nation (Spartan Bowl),” says Harvey. “I have gone to games at the Bowl since it opened in 1958 and continue to be in awe every time I step foot in it. It is truly “The Grand Palace on Grand (Avenue).”
Harvey considers covering Indiana Miss Basketball April McDivitt and All-Stars Shana Sparks and Matt Howard among his career highlights. He also recalls fondly interviewing Cincinnati Red and Detroit Tigers Manager Sparky Anderson and ESPN’s Betsy Ross during the Babe Ruth World Series held in Connersville.
He is a 1970 graduate of Connersville High School and later graduated from Ivy Tech Community College Richmond and Indiana University East.
Sam and his wife, Cathy, have two sons, Ben (Mandy) and Jared, and two grandchildren, Cooper and Claire. He is employed at Keener Corporation as Senior Project Manager, is a member of the First United Methodist Church, Past President of the Connersville Lions Club, Chairman of the Fayette County Republican Party and is a retired 24-year veteran of the Indiana Army National Guard.
