The task is clear. If the Connersville Spartans can avenge a regular-season loss to arch rival Richmond, CHS will win the school’s first sectional title since the controversial class basketball system was implemented in the 1997-98 season.
The Class 4A championship game gets started at 7:30 p.m. in New Castle Fieldhouse. Connersville (16-10) earned a spot in the game by defeating Anderson, 65-46. The defending Sectional 9 champion Red Devils (23-3) got past stubborn Mt. Vernon (Fortville), 71-61.
Richmond, ranked No. 10 in the final Associated Press poll, beat CHS, 57-49, on Dec. 20 at Tiernan Center.
The Spartans cruised past Anderson by shooting nearly 57% from the floor, making 25-of-33 free throws, playing tough defense, winning the rebounding battle, 29-21 — and keeping their composure when the pressure was at it’s highest level.
Senior sharpshooter Ty Miller led the CHS scoring with 15 points, promising sophomore Grant Smith added 12 and senior floor general Andrew Stine finished with 11.
Davious Webster paced Richmond against Mt. Vernon with 22 points, multi-talented Joel Okafor notched 17 and Auntonio Brown totaled 16.
